Once this body is wasted, when all the grunts
and growls have quit, when we have sweated and stand
naked before or sweet selves, let us claim we’ve faked

nothing. We did not tease the truth, wring
out a false inch, nor taste fear nor doubt.
Instead, we stewed in our juices, shed
our skin, eased into our scars.
