We’ve played leapfrog in our lives, trying to heave
each other’s fragile form over knives to reach
some forgotten portal, where what thrives and what’s won

is work. Regal effort. Drive. Postage
paid on triage. We’ve strived and strived, made
efforts to forget. But dives, to pirates,
are meant to hide. Not for stars.
