In spring, the great limbs of these old trees creak. When
wind falls across the bald skin, freed by a thin
blade of lightning, years recede into summer. Fade

into winter. Buds bleed their sap through
gaps of any width. Seeds fall and scraps
become weeds. Hear the laughter, the drum,
gusts we heed, because we must.
