April 6

    When the Buddha smiles

It’s likely
over some (small thing a scroll)
being left out
on the sill (as it starts to rain)
some (sacred ink)
being forever
washed away
someone crying (and clambering)
to save
impressions of the Buddha’s cheek

he’s laughing
because (if we soaked away all ink)
he remembers (each imprint and)
the octopus (could teach the tortoise)
within us (compassion)
and the birds (of truth alive)
in all the trees
see through
raindrops without
an ounce of suffering

A day is not done, until it's filled with words.
