“When you believe in things that you don’t understand, then you suffer.” – Stevie Wonder

Let us take pause a moment
from the ballplayer who bails
from the batter’s box
to spill sand before
being willing to step back in.

Please, we do not need
to seal the sale with a slap
of hands, two times left, two
right or ring a bell each time
to move on in peace.

Blue is not lucky, neither
is eating peas or pulling the label
from your jersey, spilling salt,
or leaping on one foot
repeatedly before the race.

The abuse we suffer
to keep our minds plastic,
to keep pliable the pulse of victory.
We need not bail easily from reason
just to avoid lapses in prowess.
