June 30

I’m cutting down a tree
far smarter than me,
who found root early.

I’m cutting down a tree
far smarter than me,
who took root early

in ground where its seed
was first buried, where
wind and rain buried.

I’m cutting down a tree
far smarter than me,
strong and old and wiry.

I’m cutting down a tree
to make room for me
and for my soil.
