July 8

Everyone is older than me.
That’s because I am three.

Three like the ring my mama shows me.
Three like the rings on our sapling tree.
Three like the scar on daddy’s cheek.

Everyone is younger than I,
being as I am ninety-five,

proud of somehow just being alive
where others failed and I thrived,
scared and scarred and sly.
