July 30

How long is the dawn?
Stretched from a rooftop
cut short by a cliff
off in the distance.

How long? Until the river
turns at its bend
and sends morning light
out into the ocean.

It’s curved. Like the back
of the one asleep
beside you, the one
who always loves you.

How long? A lifetime,
the length it takes to pass
over the rough edges
and peek into the light.
